Train fares rise less than planned, and the GA crosses four thousand francs.
Week 32 · 2026. The price regulator did its job this week. Public transport still gets more expensive in December, but by noticeably less than the industry asked for.
The week
Public transport fares to rise 3.6 percent, not 3.9
Alliance SwissPass and the federal price regulator settled at an average 3.6 percent from December, below the 3.9 percent announced in April. It is the first nationwide fare increase since 2023, and the industry cites staff, energy, materials and maintenance costs. A small win that most people will never notice happened.

Second-class GA goes to CHF 4,095, first class to CHF 6,770
The second-class GA travelcard rises by CHF 100 to CHF 4,095. First class goes to CHF 6,770 from CHF 6,520, against an original proposal of CHF 6,850. If you are about to buy one, buying before the December change is worth a hundred francs, which is not nothing.

Do the Halbtax arithmetic before you buy the GA
A GA only pays for itself if you genuinely travel most weeks. For a normal commute plus occasional weekends, a Halbtax plus point-to-point tickets is usually cheaper, and many employers subsidise a regional pass instead. Work out your actual routes for a month before committing four thousand francs.

This week if you're arriving
- Buy the Halbtax on arrival, not the GA. You can upgrade later once you know your real travel pattern.
- Ask HR whether the company pays for a regional travelcard. Many do, and many new arrivals never ask.
- Fares change in December, not January. If a price you were quoted looks stale, that is why.
City in focus: Geneva
- Two cities in one: the international sector and the rest, and they run on different assumptions about how much things should cost.
- Living in France and working in Geneva is common and legal, and it is a tax and insurance decision before it is a housing one. Take advice before signing.
- Childcare is the hardest thing here. You may register from the twelfth week of pregnancy through BIPE, and you must refresh your file every six months or lose your place.
- The lake is the compensation for the rent. Use it daily and the arithmetic feels better.
A quiet note
A hundred francs on a travelcard is the kind of detail that decides nothing and reveals everything. Somebody argued the industry down from 3.9 to 3.6 percent on your behalf, and you will never hear their name. That is Switzerland working the way it is supposed to: slowly, unglamorously, in the direction of the person who cannot attend the meeting. It is worth noticing, because the same machinery is what makes the trains arrive when it says they will.
