The Coconut, and what to do next

The paperwork is a fortnight. The culture is the long game. Here is the part no office hands you.

Swiss people are coconuts: hard on the outside, soft once you are through. Early politeness is not coldness, and the door that takes a year to open tends to stay open for decades.

The fastest routes in are a Verein (club) around something you already do, a language course, or the neighbour your Hauswart introduces you to. Aim for A2 in the local language in your first year: German in Zurich, Bern, Basel, Lucerne, Sankt Gallen and Zug, French in Geneva, Lausanne, Fribourg and Neuchâtel, Italian in Ticino.

At work the rule is three words: punctual, precise, direct. Five minutes early is on time, commitments are kept as stated, and colleagues tell you what they think without softening it.

Your annual maintenance list: renew your permit before it expires, review your health insurance during the switching window in autumn, and check your tax position if your salary crossed a threshold.
